The Diocese of Dallas requires all engaged couples to complete an NFP course. NFP is part of the Church’s vision for marriage, helping couples live God’s plan for family life. Unlike birth control or condoms, which the Church does not permit, NFP works with the natural rhythms of the body to either postpone pregnancy or achieve it when the couple is ready. When used correctly, NFP is as effective as hormonal contraception and in some studies even more effective.
NFP is based on observing the woman’s natural signs of fertility, such as temperature and cervical mucus. Couples chart these signs together - no drugs, devices, or side effects. It’s a shared responsibility, helping both spouses understand their fertility as a gift they steward together.
Beyond fertility awareness, NFP strengthens communication, trust, and unity in marriage. Because couples must regularly discuss their intentions—whether they’re ready for children or need to wait—NFP naturally fosters deeper conversations about family life, health, finances, and God’s call for them.
Many couples find that NFP improves their relationship, deepens respect for one another, and helps them grow closer to God and to each other
