P.L. 119-21 introduces new provisions that could trigger tax considerations for donors.
New limits to deductions for itemizers in the top tax bracket. Of particular interest to parishioners in the highest tax bracket (37%) is the new legislation which limits the tax benefit of itemized charitable deductions to 35%. For example, a $10,000 donation will yield a $3,500 deduction rather than the previous $3,700. This change will take effect in the 2026 tax year.
New floor on deductions for itemizers. Also effective for the 2026 tax year, itemizers who make charitable contributions will only be able to claim a tax deduction to the extent that their qualified contributions exceed 0.5% of their adjusted gross income (AGI). This means that a couple with an AGI of $200,000 could only deduct those charitable donations in excess of $1,000.
Please discuss these new law changes with your tax advisor soon, as it may be more tax-efficient to make donations in either 2025 or 2026, depending on your tax situation.
